OSNews published a blurb regarding the five misconceptions of LindowsOS. Since we have Lindows OS installed on a machine but we've not really talked about it and I haven't spent much time, it seemed time to actually look at this beast.

What is all this noise?

First, the link to the OSNews article, http://www.osnews.com/story.php?news_id=2240

Second, the sources.list

deb ftp://ftp.us.debian.org/debian woody main contrib non-free
deb ftp://non-us.debian.org/debian-non-US woody/non-US main contrib non-free

Third, installing synaptic is very easy. Launched a shell, su, password, and typed

apt-get update
apt-get install synaptic

The OSNews article messed up on that one but the author had the general idea. First, you don't need to upgrade and also you must include the word install :-)

Fourth, there is a usermanager utility right off the menu. L=> Settings => UserManager We've all seen that manager thousands of times. And when the system boots it comes up to a GUI requesting the userid and password. Sorry but that part of the OS is ugly.

Fifth, I didn't try the apt-get upgrade nor did I change the sources.list file but it should be possible to move to sid. Maybe I'll try it after Birdie has played with this install more.

Sixth, I've read people post that the cost of $99 is too high. Well, CNR has the full version of TuxRacer. But I'd really love to be able to pull it down from the net. Maybe LindowsOS would be accepted more if Lindows.com decided to have a 24 hour period where people could download the OS. I suspect it would make a good holiday gift ;-)

Seventh, I'll keep playing with this distribution. I'm sorry that people are too wrapped up into hating or loving a distribution or company. LindowsOS seems fine.

Eight, I have yet to try to install fluxbox or some other wm. Maybe I should give that a try !

ok, launched shell, su, password, and apt-get install fluxbox. It's installed.

Oh, I should mention that Netscape 7 rather than Mozilla is the browser off the kicker.

Ok. Alarm has gone off and therefore it is time to get ready for school ... Students are off today but teachers have to sit in meetings :-(

However, just launched konqueror and it is CVS 20020327 ... aka 3.0.1

I think the login screen is ugly too. I'm compileing a list of things that need to be improved. This OS is awesome but could be better. They've put so much time into CNR they need to tidy up other places. A control center like Lycoris/LX that's a modified Kcontrol would be a good start. Did you notice how nice the fonts are in the KDE menu? Now look at the fonts in Netscape. they could be improved. The marble icons need ditched as well. DId you see the Internet connection isp wizard? That's the only one of its kind in the linux world as far as i know. Netscape 7.0's default theme that matches the desktop is nice detailing work. I also noted that this version of Netscape has popup add blocker. That's not in the normal netscape 7.0. Its nice to have a spell checker built into the IM as well. I definitely need that.
