In 1981, the drop out rates of students from school was rampant in US. This was seen especially in students coming from a low income area, often associated with high violence. These children were found to be lacking in enough opportunities that can help them compete high school and enroll for a college. When businessman and philanthropist Eugene Lang was invited to address his elementary school students, he thought of a plan to control this high drop rates. He was inspired to tell them that he had a dream for each of them, and he spontaneously, committed to this class that any student who graduated from high school and qualified for college would be personally assisted by him to be assured the financial resources to pursue his or her college education.
The result of this was amazing! During the ensuing six years, seven of the students moved from the New York area. Of the remaining 54 students, 45 graduated from high school and more than half-attended college. Mr. Langs' success received national media coverage in 19. Slowly the program was adopted in other regions as well, with Dallas becoming the first city outside New York to do so. The I Have a Dream Foundation experienced tremendous success in Dallas as well since its inception in September of 1986.
While the I Have a Dream Foundation has experienced tremendous success since its inception in September of 1986, its continued existence is dependent upon the support of individuals, corporations and organizations in the Dallas Community who commit time, energy and resources toward the mission of the I Have A Dream Foundation. Presently, the IHAD-Dallas is managed by a team of competent board members which include David Disiere (http://www.ihad-dallas.org/ihad_ourboard.htm) of the Deep South Surplus of Texas, Helen M. Dorsey, Dr. Pepper/Seven Up Inc. James W. Loose Galloway-James Inc. and others
